From the start of my academic journey, I knew it would be both challenging and transformative. The path was anything but straightforward - it demanded perseverance, dedication, and a deep passion for learning. I pursued a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Finance at the University of Cape Town (UCT), stepping into a field that goes far beyond numbers. Finance is about understanding the intricacies of the world, the movements of global markets, and economic forces. It requires sharp analytical skills and a commitment to learning.
Entering a new world
Stepping into this world was like entering a new universe. My academic background was rooted in Math and Physics, subjects that challenged me intellectually but were also logical and structured. Terms like ‘income statement’, ‘inflation’, and ‘macroeconomic theory’ felt completely foreign during my first year at university. I remember sitting in my Accounting and Economics lectures, feeling lost as I tried to grasp concepts that seemed worlds apart from anything I had encountered before.
It was a humbling experience. The confidence I had from high school quickly turned to doubt and frustration. The concepts and vocabulary were overwhelming, but my commitment to my goal kept me going. I wasn’t ready to give up.
The turning point
Gradually, the material started to make sense. It wasn’t easy, but with time, I found my footing. Though the first year was tough, each semester brought me deeper into the world of finance. What once felt impossible became manageable, and by my second year, I was no longer just getting by —I was thriving.
More than just academics
During these early years, I realised that university is about more than academics —it’s about personal growth, resilience, and facing life’s challenges. I learned the value of hard work, finding a routine, and being patient with myself when things didn’t go as planned. My journey wasn’t defined by immediate success but by persistence, grit, and the belief that I could adapt and grow.
Pushing further
I graduated with my Bachelor of Commerce in 2022, but I wasn’t finished, I pursued my honours in Financial Risk Management in 2023, drawn to the challenge of understanding and quantifying financial risk. The unpredictable world of finance fascinated me, especially the application of mathematical models to make sense of market movements. My passion for numbers and logic found a new, intellectually stimulating outlet that was professionally rewarding.
The challenges faced during my undergraduate years shaped me into the person I am today.
As I prepare to take the next step in my career, I reflect on my journey with pride. In the beginning of 2025, I joined one of the country’s top investment banks in their Investment Banking, Global Markets division. This moment is the result of hard work, and I am deeply grateful for the experiences that shaped me. I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned.
Acknowledging the support
Before starting this next chapter, I want to acknowledge the incredible support I’ve received. University is a collective effort - friends and professors all played a crucial role in my journey. A degree is not just about individual achievement; it’s about building a strong support system and drawing on the strength and wisdom of those around you.
Advice to the Class of 2024
To the Class of 2024, my advice is simple: Follow your passion. University can be humbling. I started as a confident A-student but soon faced struggles and challenges that tested my limits. Success doesn’t come overnight- it’s about perseverance. Keep pushing forward, even when things seem impossible. The hard work will pay off.
