Access to higher education is a life-changing opportunity, but for many students, the journey does not become easier once they enter university. Beyond tuition and accommodation, there are often unexpected financial challenges that can create barriers to academic success.
The Siyandisa Achievers Programme’s Support Funding initiative was created to address these often-overlooked needs, providing targeted assistance that helps students remain focused on their studies and successfully complete their qualifications.
Supporting the realities of student life
While bursaries and institutional funding often cover major academic expenses, many students still face practical costs that can significantly impact their ability to participate fully in university life.
Through quarterly funding applications, tertiary Achievers can apply for support based on their individual needs. This may include assistance with textbooks, registration fees, data, technology, transport, accommodation, study resources, medical requirements, protective clothing and other essential academic necessities.
These may seem like small interventions, but their impact can be life-changing.
For a medical student, it may be the vaccinations required to attend practical training. For an engineering student, it may be protective equipment needed for laboratory sessions. For another student, it may be access to data for online learning or transport to campus.
These are the everyday challenges that can stand between a talented student and their academic success.
Creating stability through responsive support
“Siyandisa Support Funding helps with the immediate and very tangible needs of students, needs identified by the students themselves because, in many cases, they have no alternative source of assistance,” explains Curan May, Achievers Financial Manager.
“Many students cannot simply call a parent or relative for financial help when something unexpected arises, because their families are also facing financial challenges. Often, it is the smaller things that bursaries or other funding structures do not cover that make the biggest difference.”
By responding to these needs, Support Funding provides more than financial assistance. It provides stability, dignity and the confidence that students need to continue pursuing their dreams.
A partnership that creates measurable impact
The success of Support Funding is made possible through the generosity of donors, partners and organisations who understand that developing future professionals requires more than academic access, it requires holistic support.
Through strategic partnerships with organisations such as book suppliers, transport providers, technology companies and retailers, Siyandisa is able to provide practical assistance where it is needed most.
Every contribution helps remove a barrier. Every intervention keeps a student moving forward.
Investing in South Africa’s future professionals
Support Funding represents the Siyandisa Achievers Programme’s commitment to “filling the gaps”, addressing the challenges that are often unseen but have a significant impact on student success.
By investing in these essential needs, donors and partners become part of a larger transformation journey: enabling talented young South Africans to complete their studies, enter the workforce and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the economy.
Because sometimes success does not depend on one major opportunity. Sometimes, it depends on having the right support at the right moment.
Together, we can ensure that Achievers are not only given the opportunity to study, but the support they need to succeed.
