Campus Connect: From fellow students to family

20 May 2026 77
Campus Connect represents far more than a series of university engagements; it is a strategically evolving pillar of the Siyandisa Achievers Programme, intentionally designed to strengthen community, continuity of support, and student success throughout their tertiary journey. From the moment learners are welcomed into the programme, they become part of a dynamic national network of high-potential young leaders connected by shared ambition, resilience, and purpose.

While many Achievers initially engage through virtual academic platforms during their Grade 12 year, Campus Connect creates meaningful opportunities for students to transition those connections into authentic relationships within the university environment. For many, these engagements mark the first time they encounter peers with similar backgrounds, lived experiences, and aspirations, cultivating an immediate sense of belonging in spaces that may otherwise feel unfamiliar or overwhelming.

Central to the initiative is the programme’s growing culture of intergenerational mentorship and peer-led support. Senior Achievers and alumni who have successfully navigated university life become important sources of guidance, encouragement, and lived insight for younger students entering tertiary education. In this way, the “Connect Care” ethos continues to evolve organically across campuses, reinforcing a cycle of support in which students are empowered not only to succeed personally but to contribute meaningfully to the journeys of others.

As Campus Connect continues to mature, the initiative has evolved into a more structured and intentional support ecosystem by establishing Campus Captains across institutions of higher learning nationwide. These student leaders serve as an integral operational and relational extension of the programme within their respective universities, enabling ongoing engagement with Achievers as they progress academically, socially, and personally throughout university life.

This leadership structure significantly strengthens the programme’s ability to maintain meaningful oversight and continuity of care across campuses. Through regular engagement and peer connections, Campus Captains help foster student integration, monitor well-being, and identify areas where additional support or intervention may be needed. Equally important, the initiative enables the programme to cultivate and maintain stronger institutional relationships with relevant university departments, support services, and key stakeholders, ensuring that communication channels remain accessible, responsive, and collaborative when engaging matters affecting student success and wellness.

Beyond academic support, Campus Connect continues to play an increasingly important role in advancing student wellness, resilience, and holistic development. By creating intentional spaces for dialogue, shared experiences, mentorship, and celebration, the initiative contributes to developing confident, supported, and socially connected young leaders. The stories, achievements, and journeys shared by Achiever alumni further reinforce a culture of excellence and possibility, inspiring current students to pursue their aspirations with greater confidence and purpose.

As the Siyandisa Achievers Programme evolves, so too does the vision of Campus Connect, not merely as a student engagement initiative, but as a growing collaborative framework that strengthens the relationship between students, communities, sponsors, alumni, and institutions of higher learning. Through these partnerships, the programme continues to build a more responsive and impactful support ecosystem that enables students not only to access tertiary education but to thrive within it and contribute meaningfully beyond it.

A supportive university family built on mentorship and shared success is at the heart of the Campus Connect experience. This is reflected in the words of Programme Coordinator, Chricelda Matete:

"From the moment learners are accepted into the Achievers Programme, they become part of our Connect community. While it is exciting to meet fellow Grade 12 achievers through online sessions, it is even more meaningful when they finally meet in person at university. Coming from different parts of the country but sharing similar backgrounds creates an immediate sense of connection.

Meeting senior achievers for advice and guidance is an important part of the journey, as it strengthens the “Connect Care” culture of giving back what was once received. These interactions, whether with peers from the same village or across provinces, build a strong support system. Campus get-togethers provide a space to share challenges, celebrate achievements, and learn from alumni, while also supporting mental well-being by creating a safe environment to express frustrations and grow together into stronger, more confident students." - Chricelda Matete, Programme Coordinator
