Beyond the classroom: How Siyandisa tutorships are transforming learner success

20 May 2026 131
As the Siyandisa Achievers Programme has steadily evolved, so too has one of its most impactful pillars, Tutorship. What began in the programme’s early years as a simple yet meaningful initiative to package educational resources into a physically deliverable bag for learners has since transformed into a dynamic, highly interactive and future-focused support system designed to unlock academic potential and equip learners for long-term success.

Today, our Tutorship offering extends far beyond providing resources. It represents a holistic academic support ecosystem that combines access to technology, connectivity, quality teaching and learner development in a way that meaningfully responds to the realities faced by many South African learners.

As part of the Siyandisa Achiever Kit, each learner receives a branded backpack, a tablet device with protective accessories, a Vodacom SIM card with 80GB of monthly data for the duration of the programme, access to additional educational resources through the Vodacom e-School platform, a power bank and Achiever-branded merchandise. Tablets are pre-loaded with communication and learning utilities to ensure seamless engagement between Achievers and the Programme Team, while also enabling continuous access to educational support and digital learning opportunities.

To further extend the impact and accessibility of this leg of the programme, we have also developed an internal digital learning portal, which serves as a central hub for ongoing learner support and engagement. Tutorship sessions are recorded and made available on the platform, allowing Achievers to revisit lessons, reinforce key concepts and continuously engage with subject material at their own pace. Using their tablet devices and monthly data allocation, learners can access valuable academic content, revisit key themes across subjects, and strengthen their understanding beyond the live classroom environment. This has become an important tool in promoting continuous learning, accountability and academic confidence among our Achievers.

Our current key focus subject areas include English, Mathematics, Accounting, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences, all critical gateway subjects that open pathways to tertiary study and future career opportunities.

At the heart of this initiative is a team of highly qualified Tutors who specialise in their respective subject fields. Beyond their academic expertise, our Tutors bring passion, energy and a genuine commitment to learner success. They do not simply teach content; they cultivate confidence, encourage critical thinking, introduce innovative learning strategies and create supportive learning environments that empower learners to strive for excellence.

As we continue to grow the reach and impact of the Siyandisa Achievers Programme, the Tutorship pillar remains a powerful reflection of our commitment to educational equity, holistic learner development and sustainable academic achievement. Through strategic partnerships, collaborative support and shared investment in South Africa’s youth, we believe we can continue to transform educational outcomes and help shape a generation of future leaders, professionals and changemakers.

Tutorships: what our Tutors say

Chakes Mashaba

Physical Sciences tutor

One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been seeing how consistent, patient support can gradually build both understanding and confidence. Many students initially find Physical Sciences intimidating, but with the right guidance, they begin to approach the subject with curiosity rather than hesitation. I have particularly enjoyed watching learners start to connect theoretical concepts to real-world applications, whether it’s understanding chemical reactions or developing analytical thinking skills. That shift in perspective often marks a turning point in their academic journey.

Lisemelo Chetetsi

English Tutor

A defining aspect of my experience with Siyanda Achievers has been working with highly motivated students who are eager to learn and succeed in their academic pursuits. I have found their dedication deeply inspiring, as it consistently shapes a positive and engaging learning environment. Being part of their learning journey has been meaningful and rewarding. It has also reinforced my appreciation for the importance of student-centred teaching, where encouragement, patience and consistent support contribute to both confidence and academic growth.

Lemohang Gumenku

Mathematics & Life Sciences tutor

Over the past four years with the Achievers Programme, I have had the distinct privilege of tutoring both Life Sciences and Mathematics, initially serving in Life Sciences before later broadening my contributions to include Mathematics. This journey has been profoundly enriching, affording me the opportunity to guide learners through complex subject matter while cultivating their analytical thinking, problem-solving capacity, and academic self-assurance. Among the most rewarding aspects has been witnessing students gradually transform uncertainty into confidence within disciplines they once perceived as daunting.

Tshepang Makhetha

Accounting tutor

It has been an honour to serve the learners with my skills and talent. It is very fulfilling to see that I can serve as a tool to make a positive impact on learners. I aim to empower the learners and their confidence in the subject to be able to achieve success in their examinations.

Chricelda Matete

Achievers’ Programme Coordinator

The tutorship sessions give our achievers a better grasp of their areas of difficulty, provide structure for revision, and boost their confidence by allowing them to actively engage with the academic content. The grade 12 curriculum is supported by our transformative sessions. Having tutors who work in academia helps our students with a variety of instructional strategies.
