The Achievers Programme exists to do more than support students academically; it intentionally fills critical spaces in the journeys of young people whose potential deserves the opportunity to flourish. Through mentorship, and sustained support, the programme ensures that talent is never limited by circumstance.

One such inspiring story is that of an alumnus whose journey from Tzaneen in Limpopo to the University of Cape Town reflects the transformative power of timely support, belief, and opportunity.

Humble beginnings, extraordinary potential

Born in Tzaneen, Limpopo, Gladwin Ngobeni spent his early years in Joppie Village, living with his grandparents while attending Mavabaza Primary School.

After beginning Grade 8 at Tiakeni Secondary School, he moved to Sevengwani High School, living alone in Mavele Village while his parents worked away from home. This experience quietly shaped the determination and self-discipline that would define his academic path.

A passion for science and building solutions

Gladwin later enrolled at the University of Cape Town, studying computer science and mathematics.

Initially drawn to astrophysics because of his fascination with space and physics, he briefly pursued a triple major in computer science, physics, and mathematics. Over time, however, he recognised that computer science offered what he enjoyed most: the opportunity to create practical solutions, applications where curiosity meets innovation.

Excellence nurtured through opportunity

His academic promise was already evident in high school, where he participated in science initiatives linked to Eskom and the Department of Water & Sanitation, winning awards and earning the opportunity to represent South Africa internationally before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans.

Through this journey, he was discovered and supported by the Siyandisa Achievers Programme, which recognised his potential and stepped in to ensure financial barriers did not limit his aspirations.

At university, he continued to excel, earning a place on the Dean’s Merit List. A research project comparing diffusion models and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) deepened his interest in artificial intelligence, while tutoring both university and high school students allowed him to share knowledge and support others along their academic journeys.

Just as valuable were the relationships he built with peers from different faculties and countries, experiences that broadened his perspective and enriched his time at university.

Navigating challenges with resilience and support

Like many students navigating higher education, his journey included real challenges. Financial pressures remained a constant consideration, and he also lives with fine motor difficulties, which made writing exams particularly demanding. At one point, personal circumstances led him to take a leave of absence, testing both his resolve and his motivation.

What carried him through was the support around him. With assistance from the university’s Disability Service, he received exam accommodations, including the use of a scribe and a separate writing space, support that allowed his abilities to shine.

Mentors, lecturers, and advocates also played a vital role in helping him navigate academic and financial hurdles. When he returned from his leave of absence, he did so with renewed determination to complete his studies.

Gratitude for those who filled the space

Reflecting on his journey, he expresses deep gratitude for those who stood beside him.

Gladwin credits his family, particularly his mother, for the sacrifices that made his education possible. He is also thankful to the professors, university support staff, and students who trusted him as their tutor.

He acknowledges Mohammed Kajee for helping him navigate financial aid challenges and extends heartfelt appreciation to the Siyandisa Foundation, whose support began in high school and continued throughout his academic journey.

Friends and the broader Cape Town community also played an important role, helping to sustain his passion during moments when the path felt uncertain.

The Achievers Programme: Filling the space when it matters most

Stories like Gladwin's journey capture the spirit of the Achievers Programme.

Through intentional investment, mentorship, and belief in young people’s potential, the programme helps fill the gaps where opportunity might otherwise fall short, whether financial, academic, or emotional.

Each bursary, mentorship opportunity, and academic intervention is more than support; it is a deliberate investment, enabling students to step confidently into the spaces they are destined to occupy.
