When Lusanda Siwela reflects on what it means to be a Campus Captain, it has little to do with titles or recognition. Instead, it is about being present for fellow students when they need someone most.

"Being a Campus Captain means being the person a first- or second-year student texts at 11 pm when they're panicking about a module they're failing," says Lusanda. "Not because I have all the answers, but because I've been through that same panic and made it out the other side."

For Lusanda, Campus Connect fills a gap that formal academic support cannot. While lecturers provide knowledge, peer mentors offer something equally valuable: understanding, encouragement and reassurance from someone who has walked the same path.

"University is about much more than academics," Lusanda explains. "Students face uncertainty, self-doubt and moments where they question whether they belong. Sometimes, all they need is someone who understands and reminds them that they're capable."

One experience that stands out is seeing students Lusanda once mentored confidently attend graduate recruitment career fairs. Watching them engage with recruiters, prepared and believing in themselves, reinforced the true purpose of mentorship.

"It's not just about getting through a degree," Lusanda says. "It's about reaching those career milestones already believing you belong there."

Serving as a Campus Captain has also shaped Lusanda's own leadership style.

"I've learned that real leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room. It's about noticing who hasn't spoken yet and making space for them. Sometimes saying, 'I don't know, but let's figure it out together,' builds more trust than always having the perfect answer."

Looking ahead, Lusanda hopes Campus Connect continues to grow into a lifelong community where Achievers return after graduation to mentor and encourage the next generation.

Lusanda also has a heartfelt message for Siyandisa's sponsors: "Your funding gets a student into the lecture hall. Campus Connect is what convinces them they deserve to stay there."

Guided by the simple but powerful words, "Let bygones be bygones," Lusanda believes that growth begins when students are able to leave past setbacks behind and embrace new opportunities.

Through Campus Captains like Lusanda Siwela, the Siyandisa Achievers Programme continues to nurture more than academic success, it develops compassionate leaders who inspire confidence, create belonging and empower others to realise their full potential.
