Turning setbacks into stepping stones

14 November 2024 230

In the fast-paced world of finance and auditing, resilience and perseverance are essential qualities that set individuals apart. We are thrilled to spotlight one of our own—a rising talent whose journey serves as an inspiring example for young people in South Africa and beyond. Now an Audit Associate at a top global firm, this remarkable individual has transformed challenges into stepping stones, demonstrating unwavering dedication in her pursuit of excellence.

After matriculating in 2018, Gemeli Mulamuleli began her academic journey at the University of the Witwatersrand, earning a Bachelor of Accounting Science degree followed by an NQF 8 (Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy). Her first year was smooth sailing, but like many students, she encountered significant challenges in her second and third years, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional learning. The shift to online classes and balancing a heavy workload led to a dip in her grades, forcing her to make a tough decision: repeat her NQF 8 program to strengthen her foundation and ensure long-term success.

Looking back on this challenging period, Gemeli shares a powerful lesson: success is built on consistency and the determination to keep showing up, no matter how difficult the journey may be. Staying focused on the end goal while leaning on the support systems around us is crucial. As she puts it, “Support is all around us—family, friends, organisations like Siyandisa, and our educational institutions. But it only makes a difference if we actively seek the support we need.”

Six years after matriculating, Gemeli is now thriving in the field of auditing, applying the skills and knowledge she worked so hard to build. It’s truly inspiring to see how her academic journey has translated into real-world success. Though the learning curve was steep, she embraced each lesson and growth opportunity with enthusiasm, continuously reinforcing her belief in the power of patience and persistence.

Her motto, "I love to see young people winning," perfectly captures her spirit. For Gemeli, every step forward is a win, and she celebrates each small milestone- whether achieved by friends, family, or herself. From conquering a challenging module to reaching out for support, or progressing through a tough project, every victory, big or small, is cherished.

To fellow students, she shares an inspiring message: “Your dreams matter and are valid. You just need to be bold enough to work on them until they unfold—you’ve got this.”

Gemeli’s journey is a testament to resilience, the power of showing up, and the beauty of celebrating progress at every step. We, at Siyandisa Achievers, couldn’t be prouder and look forward to all she will continue to accomplish as she thrives in her career.
