In 2017, when Siyandisa was just beginning its journey, a young student in his final year of high school found himself embarking on a path that would change his life. As a member of the pioneering group of Siyandisa scholars, Phole Mofokeng was among the first to experience the foundation’s transformative impact. Today, as a successful Actuarial Analyst, he reflects on how those early days shaped him into the person he is today.
“Being part of the very first group to join Siyandisa was something I didn’t take lightly. It’s one of those things I look back on with a great smile and a lot of pride,” he said.
The foundation provided invaluable resources, including career guidance and tools that would help learners navigate the demands of high school and beyond. For Phole, one particular resource stood out—the tablet loaded with educational videos. “The tutorial videos, especially for English FAL, were a game-changer for me,” he recalls. “I spent hours watching those videos, and I honestly believe that if it wasn’t for them, my performance at the end of the year wouldn’t have been as strong.”
Along with the educational tools, Siyandisa also provided Phole with monthly data, enabling him to access the internet at a time when it wasn’t easily available to all. This access didn’t just help him with his own work; it empowered him to assist others in his community, something he now holds close to his heart. “It felt good to be able to use that device to help my peers to apply at universities,” he reflects.
By the end of his Grade 12 year, Phole had earned first place in the Free State Province, a remarkable achievement that he never expected. “I was over the moon, humbled by the support that made it all possible,” he shared.
Phole's hard work and determination paid off when he received an offer to study Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town. University life was a far cry from the expectations he had set. “Actuarial Science wasn’t just about numbers; it was much more complex. It was an incredible journey, filled with challenges that helped me grow,” he explained.
In 2022, Phole completed his Bachelor of Commerce in Actuarial Science and quickly entered the workforce as an Actuarial Analyst for an Investment Holding company. Today, he continues his career with Old Mutual, where he works as part of the MFC Finance Team.
Looking back on his journey, he knows that without the Siyandisa Foundation, his path may have been very different. The resources, the support, and the sense of belonging within the Siyandisa family gave him the tools to succeed. "Siyandisa didn't just offer academic resources; they created a community that truly cared about my future,” he reflected, expressing his gratitude.
Phole's story is a testament to the power of education, the impact of community, and the lasting influence of the Siyandisa Foundation. It’s a journey that continues to inspire not just himself, but all who hear it.
