Some people rise above adversity not because they are untouched by hardship, but because of their unwavering commitment to their dreams and the strong support systems surrounding them. Lwazi Thobani’s story is a powerful testament to resilience—a journey marked by heartbreak, struggle, faith, and perseverance that truly inspires.
After completing Grade 12 in 2018, Lwazi embarked on a promising academic journey, enrolling at the University of Cape Town (UCT) to pursue a BSc in Civil Engineering. The first three years at UCT were smooth sailing—academic excellence came naturally, and Lwazi found himself not only excelling in his studies but also making time for extracurricular activities. By his third year, in 2021, his efforts had earned him a spot on the Dean’s Merit List, an accomplishment that many students only dream of. In addition to his academic success, Lwazi also gave back to the community, dedicating over 45 hours to community service through Engineers Without Borders. This selflessness was recognised with the UCT Silver Award, a reflection of the values that define them as individual.
But in October 2021, everything changed. In the middle of his exams, Lwazi received the devastating news of his father’s passing - a loss so profound that many would have struggled to carry on. Yet, amid grief, he found strength in an unexpected place. He made the courageous decision to continue with his exams, knowing deep down that this was what his father would have wanted. He attended the funeral and, after paying his respects, returned to a challenging Structures Exam just days later. It was a test of resilience, a testament to the kind of strength that can only come from honouring the memory of a loved one.
However, the journey ahead was far from easy. The weight of his father’s loss took a growing toll on his mental health, and by 2022, Lwazi faced one of his toughest challenges yet. The drive that had once fuelled his academic success was now clouded by doubt and a sense of loss. Lwazi found himself questioning the very purpose of his hard work and achievements when life could change in an instant, stripping away those you love. The grief was overwhelming, and it led to a difficult year marked by feelings of being unprepared for exams, the pressure of cramming, and ultimately, failing a module. But despite it all, Lwazi did not give up.
Seeking help from UCT’s Student Wellness, Lwazi began confronting the profound impact of his father’s passing. With this newfound understanding, he regrouped and found the strength to press forward, determined to succeed and honour his father’s memory. In 2023, he returned to the module he had failed and excelled, earning an impressive 92%. The emotional weight and overwhelming pressure continued to make it difficult to complete his design project and thesis, and once again, Lwazi found himself marked absent. However, this time, he knew he had an army behind him - an unwavering network of support.
Through the invaluable guidance of mentors and the steadfast encouragement from the Siyandisa Achievers, Lwazi pushed through. The Achievers Programme, a vital part of Lwazi’s journey since high school, continued to offer both financial assistance and emotional support, ensuring he never faced his struggles alone. The unwavering love of his family also played a crucial role in keeping him grounded and focused.
During 2024, Lwazi had two modules left to complete - his design project and thesis. With perseverance, faith, and the support of his mentors, Lwazi completed both. His academic success, however, is just one part of the story. Lwazi’s journey to this point is a testament to the power of community, family, faith, and above all, the refusal to give up.
Through his story, he reminds us that success is not defined by the absence of setbacks but by the determination to rise each time we fall.
Lwazi will form part of the Autumn 2025 graduations, having completed his BSc degree in Civil Engineering.
