As part of the Siyandisa Foundation, we have the privilege of witnessing the journeys of many remarkable young people. Aphiwe’s journey is one that reflects the spirit of our Achiever’s Programme: it’s filled with determination, growth, and a commitment to succeed. 

Aphiwe’s path to Siyandisa began with a friend’s encouragement. Initially hesitant, Aphiwe applied and was selected for our Achiever’s Programme, which he now describes as a “pivotal part” of his journey. The programme provided him with essential funding support and the mining safety gear he needed—an early but vital step in his understanding of the mining profession. "Having that gear felt like Siyandisa believed in me and wanted me to succeed,” he recalls. “It wasn’t just a practical gift; it was a reminder of the importance of safety in this field.” 

This commitment to safety became more than just an ideal for Aphiwe—it became his reality when he participated in the Sibanye Stillwater Practical Workshop, a key part of his second-year curriculum. For four days, Aphiwe and his peers immersed themselves in the intricate workings of a mine at Sibanye Stillwater’s Kloof Operations. The workshop introduced him to multiple departments essential to a mining operation, from Rigging to Electricity, Fitting, and Boiler-making. This hands-on experience allowed Aphiwe to gain valuable insights into what each of these roles contributes to the bigger picture. 

But the learning didn’t end there. The students were tasked with compiling a detailed report to summarise their experiences and insights gained during the workshop. For Aphiwe, completing that report and receiving a certificate at the end of the experience were proud moments. It marked a milestone that went beyond the classroom, cementing his understanding of the real-world responsibilities he would one day face in his career. 

In addition to hands-on learning, Aphiwe has also found success in innovative projects. Recently, he and his team earned second place for developing an app for a mining company—a project that required creativity, collaboration, and determination. “It was such a rewarding experience,” Aphiwe said. “We didn’t just receive prizes and certificates; it gave us a sense of purpose and the confidence that we’re capable of meaningful contributions.” 

Despite these accomplishments, Aphiwe’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Like many students, he found the transition from high school to university life daunting. The increased workload, the need for independent study, and the adjustment to a new academic culture were all hurdles to overcome. At times, he admits, it felt overwhelming. However, he’s quick to point out that these challenges have taught him invaluable lessons about persistence and resilience. 

Through all of this, Aphiwe’s dedication to his academics has been unwavering. For him, studying mining engineering is more than just learning facts and figures; it’s about grasping the underlying principles that will guide his future work. As he puts it, “This field is intense, but every challenge I face now prepares me for the role I hope to play in the industry.”

Each of Aphiwe’s experiences, from workshops to project successes, is a testament to his growing expertise and readiness for the future.
